The best family beaches in Phuket are Surin for space and clear water and Nai Harn for calm water and easy supervision. Kata, Kata Noi, Kamala, southern Bang Tao and Nai Yang are strong alternatives. All of them are best from November to April. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rip currents and red flags, and Phuket's lifeguard chief has called October one of the most dangerous months, so check the flags every day.

Surin Beach: best for space and clear water

‍
Surin is a roughly 1 km beach on Phuket's northwest coast, lined with casuarina trees. In high season the water is clear and fairly calm, and the beach is large enough that it rarely feels crowded. It has few sunbeds and umbrellas because Surin was cleared of most commercial activity in 2014, so bring your own shade (any sunbeds at beach clubs usually require a minimum spend). Restaurants nearby serve drinks and food, and there's free parking behind the beach, though in the high season it fills early, so arrive early. Lifeguards patrol in season.

‍

The catch: Surin has a steep drop-off, and there are no public toilets on the beach, so use the restaurants. Keep children within arm's reach and swim only between the red and yellow flags.

Nai Harn Beach: best for calm water and easy supervision

‍
Nai Harn is a sheltered, crescent-shaped bay of about 600–700 m between two headlands. From November to April the water is calm, the slope into the sea is gentle, and the small bay makes it easy to keep children in sight. There are lifeguards, cafés, and free, shaded parking between the beach and Nai Harn Lake. You can rinse off in the freshwater lake just behind the beach. In the monsoon, rip currents and red flags are common here too.

More family beaches

  • Kata Beach: Gentle waves, soft sand, lifeguards, shops and restaurants. A good first-timer beach in the dry season.
  • Kata Noi: Quieter and sheltered, with lifeguards and clear water in high season.
  • Kamala: Shallow and calm, especially at the northern end. Good for toddlers.
  • Bang Tao (southern end): Calm and shallow near Laguna in the dry season. The northern end has bigger waves and a faster drop.
  • Nai Yang: Shallow and calm in the central section, with casuarina shade and a quiet feel. Lifeguard cover is limited.

Beaches to skip for swimming with kids

‍
Patong is busy and not a family beach. Rawai has muddy shallows and isn't a swimming beach. On any day, skip a beach flying red flags. Karon and Mai Khao are long, with strong currents or thin lifeguard cover in the monsoon.

Know the flags.

‍

  • Swim only between the red and yellow flags, where lifeguards are on duty.
  • Lifeguards typically staff the main beaches from about 9am to 6pm in the dry season. Coverage is thinner on quiet beaches.
  • A red flag means no swimming even if the water looks calm.
  • If a rip current pulls you, swim sideways along the beach, not against it, and keep children within arm's reach.
  • Don't rely on the beach you remember: currents change every season.

‍

Beach day or boat day?

‍
In the wetter months, a boat day can be a calmer way to get children in the water. We decide each day whether tours run based on sea conditions. On our Phi Phi & Bamboo Island tour, Bamboo Island has a wide beach where the water is shallow enough to wade far out, with a reef just offshore. See our Bamboo Island guide.

‍

Life jackets are provided for all ages, seasickness tablets are provided, and children aged 4 to 11 pay the child price (infants are 0 to 3; children under 1 cannot join). More in our family island tours guide.

Where to stay near a family beach

‍
Katathani Phuket Beach Resort is on Kata Noi, and The Slate is close to Nai Yang and Sirinat National Park. See where to stay in Phuket for island day trips. October is the wetter season. Check our best time to visit for what to expect.
